Los Cristianos with Kids: Family Guide by Residents (2026)

Los Cristianos with Kids

Taking Los Cristianos with kids as your Tenerife South base is, in my experience, the best decision families with children under 10 can make. I've watched countless families arrive at Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas and realise within 24 hours that the beaches are too exposed, the noise levels too high, or the promenade lacks the calm infrastructure that young children need. Los Cristianos has two of the safest beaches on the island, a completely flat stroller-friendly promenade, a harbour that children find endlessly entertaining, and direct access to some of the best family activities in the whole of Spain.

This guide covers beaches, activities, restaurants, and practical logistics, all written from the perspective of someone who lives here year-round and knows which ice cream shop has the best flavours and where the lifeguards actually watch the water.

Best Family Beaches

Playa de las Vistas

Playa de las Vistas

Playa de las Vistas is the flagship family beach in Tenerife South: 1km long, Blue Flag awarded, lifeguards on duty 10:00-18:00, and built with a gently sloping entry that means children can walk 15-20 metres into the water before it reaches waist height on an adult. The sand is clean imported golden colour, good for sandcastles, easy to brush off feet. The promenade running the full length of the beach is car-free and wide enough for pushchairs, scooters, and running children simultaneously. Ice cream stalls at multiple points (the gelateria near the western end has 30+ flavours). Beach volleyball nets for older children. The walk from the eastern end to the Siam Park direction gives older children a longer adventure route. From Ático Summerland apartment, this beach is a 5-minute walk, pack the beach bag the night before.

Playa de Los Cristianos

Playa de Los Cristianos

For children under 5, Playa de Los Cristianos is the best beach in Tenerife South, possibly the best in the Canaries for toddlers. The harbour wall creates an almost completely enclosed bay where wave action is negligible even when the swell is up elsewhere. The water is very shallow for a long distance, warm (20-24°C year-round), and transparent. Children can play at the edge for hours without any genuine risk. The backdrop is the working fishing harbour, watch the Fred Olsen ferries arriving from La Gomera, pelicans roosting on the harbour wall, and fishing boats returning with the morning catch. The surrounding streets have authentic cafés, ice cream, and the start of the promenade loop. This beach fills up by 11:00 in peak season, so arrive early or aim for late afternoon when the main crowd thins.

Los Cristianos Harbour

Harbour Area

The Los Cristianos harbour area is underrated as a family destination in its own right. The wide stroller-friendly promenade around the harbour is one of the flattest, most walkable stretches in the whole south, no cobblestones, no steep sections. Children are consistently fascinated by the working elements: pelicans that roost on the harbour wall and beg for fish scraps, the Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas ferries loading passengers and vehicles for La Gomera (departure times worth watching if you have a train-obsessed child), fishing boats unloading the morning catch. Glass-bottom boat tours depart from here (€15-20 per adult, younger children often free or half price), a 1-hour circuit showing colourful fish through the hull is perfect for children aged 5-10. Evening promenade walks here are safe, lit, and calm.

Beach Safety for Children

Tenerife South's UV index reaches 9-11 (extreme) in summer, significantly higher than northern Europe and deceptively strong even in winter (6-8). Children burn faster than adults in these conditions, and the equatorial clarity of the Canarian atmosphere means cloud cover provides less UV protection than it appears. Factor 50 for all children under 12, reapply every 90 minutes, and consider SPF-rated rashguards for all-day beach sessions. Lifeguards operate 10:00-18:00 at both main beaches, stay within the flagged swimming zone. Set a meeting point with older children in case of separation: the lifeguard tower is the universal meeting point. Heat exhaustion risk is real for young children: schedule a shaded break 12:00-15:00 during peak summer and keep water bottles filled.

Family Activities

Kismat Tandoori Restaurant

Monkey Park

Monkey Park on the Arico road (20 minutes from Los Cristianos by taxi, ~€18-20 fare) is one of the best small animal parks I've encountered anywhere in Europe for children aged 4-12. Adult entry €12, child €9, open 09:30-17:00. The park is small enough to complete thoroughly in 1.5-2 hours, no trudging for miles between enclosures. The headline experiences: ring-tailed lemurs that walk onto your shoulders and arms freely (you can hold them), close-up tortoises that children can touch, crocodiles in a naturalistic enclosure, various marmosets, and parakeets. The keeper talks are in English and Spanish. The intimate scale means children engage properly rather than glimpsing distant animals. Take the number 473 bus towards Arico and ask the driver to stop at Monkey Park, or pre-book a return taxi. It's easily combined with a morning at the beach.

Ricos Restaurant Los Cristianos

Siam Park Day Trip

Siam Park has held the TripAdvisor World's Best Water Park title multiple years running, and with children aged 6+, it absolutely delivers on that billing. Adult ticket €35, child €25, family tickets available. It's a 10-minute taxi from Los Cristianos (€8-10). Minimum height restrictions apply to the extreme rides (Tower of Power: 140cm, Dragon: 130cm) but there is a full-scale children's area called Jungle Snakes with small slides, splash zones, and shallow pools perfect for ages 3-8. The Wave Palace artificial wave pool is excellent for all ages. The lazy river circuit takes 15-20 minutes and is genuinely relaxing for parents. Book online in advance, 10% discount typically available, plus guaranteed entry on busy summer days when walk-up queues can be long. Take sun cream: the park provides very limited shade in the ride queue areas.

Evening Promenade

The Los Cristianos evening promenade is one of the genuinely family-friendly evening experiences in Tenerife South. From around 18:00, the seafront fills with a mix of locals and tourists, the atmosphere is animated but calm, and the route from the harbour along Playa de las Vistas is completely car-free. Street performers appear most evenings near the harbour: musicians, living statues, and the occasional magic show geared toward children. The pelicans on the harbour wall become more active at dusk. Ice cream options are better in Los Cristianos than anywhere else in the south, the gelateria near the harbour does proper Italian-style gelato at €2.50-3 per scoop. For children who have been active all day, the 45-minute circular walk harbour → beach promenade → back captures most of what makes Los Cristianos special at zero cost.

Monkey Park Tenerife

Sunday Market

The Los Cristianos Sunday Market near the bus station runs from approximately 09:00-14:00 and is a genuinely local affair with a small but worthwhile family dimension. Stalls sell crafts, jewellery, Canarian produce (mojo sauces, local honey, papas arrugadas ingredients), fresh fruit, second-hand items, and various artisan goods. Children enjoy the browsing atmosphere, particularly the fruit stalls with exotic varieties. The market is compact, 45 minutes is enough to see everything, making it a good morning activity before the beach fills up. Combine it with breakfast at one of the cafés near the bus station where local working families eat: a café con leche and tostada with tomato costs €2.50-3 and is significantly better value than promenade tourist cafés. Good for teaching children about authentic local market culture without it being overwhelming in scale.

Family Dining & Practical Tips

Puerto Los Cristianos Marina

Best Family Restaurants

Three reliable family restaurant picks in Los Cristianos: Little India Tenerife (rated 4.9★ on Google) is genuinely child-friendly with mild curry options, mango lassi that children love, and staff who treat families well, it's busier with local expat families than tourists, which is the right signal. Ricos Italian (4.8★) on the promenade does proper pizza and pasta with genuine gelato desserts, children who are tired and hungry will always eat pizza, and the service is fast enough for short attention spans. For casual breakfasts, the harbour-front cafés serve fresh orange juice, croissants, and tostadas at €5-8 per person total, far better value and atmosphere than the large tourist restaurant terraces on the main strip. Self-catering for lunches from Mercadona supermarket keeps the budget sensible.

Getting Around with Kids

Los Cristianos is one of the easiest Tenerife South resorts for families without a rental car. The flat promenade means pushchairs and strollers are practical for beach and harbour walks. TITSA bus 473 has pushchair spaces and connects to Las Américas (for Siam Park) and Costa Adeje, tickets €2-4, drivers are used to families with children. Taxis are readily available from the rank near the harbour: a fare to Siam Park is €8-10, to Monkey Park €18-20, to the airport €20-25. For Teide or other island-day trips, a rental car is genuinely easier with children (car seats available from rental companies, book in advance). The walking distances within Los Cristianos are all under 15 minutes: apartments → beach → harbour → market → supermarket all accessible without any transport. This is a meaningful quality-of-life difference with young children.

Best Time to Visit with Children

The ideal periods for a family holiday to Los Cristianos: late May to mid-June and September to mid-October. During these windows, temperatures are warm (24-27°C), the sea is comfortable (21-23°C), and the resorts are noticeably less crowded than peak summer, making beaches, restaurants, and attractions easier to navigate with children. July and August are hot (27-30°C), busy, and expensive, manageable but not optimal for under-5s who struggle with midday heat. Easter is extremely busy (Spanish domestic tourism peaks), avoid for families seeking space. Christmas-New Year is popular with British families: good festive atmosphere, mild weather (20-23°C), but premium prices. November is genuinely underrated for families: warm, quiet, cheapest prices of the year, and the Canarian school groups have returned home leaving the beaches unusually peaceful.

Where to Stay

Ático Summerland in Los Cristianos is the ideal family base for this guide. It's a top-floor penthouse apartment with a private terrace, the terrace provides secure outdoor space for children to have breakfast, play, or wind down in the evenings without needing to go anywhere. It sleeps 4, has a full kitchen for preparing children's meals and packed lunches, air conditioning throughout, and the shared pool complex. Playa de las Vistas is a 5-minute walk, the harbour is 10 minutes, and Mercadona supermarket for supplies is close by. Booking direct from the owner saves 15-30% vs Airbnb or Booking.com, on a 2-week family stay that's €150-300 extra in your pocket for Monkey Park, Siam Park, and ice cream. Contact via the website to check availability and get current prices by season.
