Day 1: Arrive, Beach & Sunset

Morning: Check In & First Beach
Arrive at Marta Mare Verde, settle in, and resist the urge to plan anything complicated for the first morning. A pool dip followed by the 5-minute walk to Playa Fañabé is the right first move, it establishes the pace and reminds you why you came. Fañabé is Blue Flag, has good sunbed availability before 11:00 (€5-8 each), and the water is calm enough for a comfortable first swim if you've just arrived from a cold climate. The beach café does decent coffee and tostadas for €4-6 per person, eat on the terrace watching the sea wake up. If you've booked a morning flight, you'll arrive early afternoon and this beach start flows into the afternoon coastal walk without any wasted time. Bring reef-safe sunscreen: Canarian UV in May-October is significantly stronger than European skin expects, and sunburn on day one ruins the rest of the weekend.

Afternoon: Playa del Duque
Walk 20 minutes west along the coast from Fañabé to Playa del Duque, the most prestigious beach on the island. The coastal path passes Playa Torviscas and offers good views across the Atlantic towards La Gomera. Playa del Duque has a markedly different atmosphere from Fañabé: calmer, more manicured, with the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque providing a glamorous backdrop. Hire sunbeds (€7-8 each) in the central section, avoid the northern end (subtle rip current when swell is present). Swim in the clear, calm water. The beach seafront café serves ice cream and cold drinks at reasonable prices. Stay until 17:00-17:30 and then walk back to Fañabé direction to freshen up before the sunset boat trip. The afternoon light at Playa del Duque between 16:00-17:00 is particularly beautiful, golden hour starts early here due to the westward orientation.
Sunset Boat Trip
Pre-book a 2-hour sunset sailing trip from Puerto Colon harbour (15 minutes taxi from Marta Mare Verde, €8-10). Several operators run evening wildlife and sunset cruises: typical cost €35-50 per person with a complimentary glass of Cava or local wine included. Departures around 17:30-18:00 position you perfectly for golden hour and sunset on the water. The Tenerife channel's resident pilot whales are seen on the majority of evening sailings, they're most active in the late afternoon. Common dolphins frequently ride the bow wave of sailing vessels. Seeing pilot whales surface at close range with the sun setting behind La Gomera is genuinely one of the most memorable experiences Tenerife offers. Book in advance for weekend evenings in peak season (May-October), these trips fill quickly. Check operator reviews on TripAdvisor: the quality difference between top and bottom-rated operators is significant.

Dinner: Mirador Centinela
Mirador Centinela is the most romantic restaurant in Costa Adeje, possibly in all of Tenerife South. The cliffside location provides a panoramic Atlantic view that changes colour through the meal as the sun disappears and the evening sky deepens. The menu focuses on fresh fish and Canarian dishes with a fine-dining presentation. Mains typically €22-35. Pre-booking is essential, particularly for weekend evenings and peak season. Request a window table when booking. The drive or taxi to Mirador Centinela is 10-15 minutes from Marta Mare Verde (taxi ~€10-12). Dress code is smart-casual, it's the kind of place where putting on something slightly nicer than beach wear enhances the experience. Budget €60-90 for two including wine. The combination of pilot whales on the sunset boat trip and this view over dinner creates a first evening in Tenerife that's difficult to match anywhere in Europe at this price point.
